The Creative Workout: Practice these 8 habits to keep your creativity in shape

Updated: Mar 9, 2024

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people claim being "not a creative person" as a personality trait, as if their imagination is dead. Yes, creativity may come easier to others, but it's not because of some superpower or bite from the creativity bug. It's because creative people practice being creative.

As we get older, our life forms into more routines, set of rules and norms to follow, and repeated experiences. Before we know it, we get in a cycle of doing and thinking about the same things every day. So it makes sense that people feel less creative as they age. Our imagination isn't needed anymore and it starts to weaken. But just like working out will build the muscles in your body, there ways we can workout our imaginations.

Try a few of these 8 habits to keep your creativity in shape:

  1. Daily Mindful Moments: Start your day with a moment of mindfulness. Whether it's meditation, deep breathing exercises, or a quiet stroll, these practices help clear the mental clutter, creating space for fresh ideas and perspectives.

  2. Diverse Reading Habits: Expand your mind by diversifying your reading list. Explore genres, authors, and topics outside your comfort zone. Exposure to different perspectives stimulates creative thinking and broadens your intellectual horizons.

  3. Artistic Expression Breaks: Incorporate short breaks for artistic expression into your routine. Whether it's sketching, doodling, or playing a musical instrument, these moments of creative play can fuel your imagination and enhance problem-solving skills.

  4. Collaborative Brainstorming Sessions: Foster creativity through collaboration. Engage in brainstorming sessions with friends, colleagues, or fellow creatives. Different viewpoints often lead to innovative ideas and solutions that may not have surfaced in isolation.

  5. Embrace Constraints: Rather than seeing constraints as limitations, view them as opportunities. Set specific constraints for creative projects, like time limits or material restrictions. These limitations can ignite innovative thinking and force you to find unconventional solutions.

  6. Change Your Surroundings: Break the monotony by changing your physical environment. Whether it's working from a new cafe, rearranging your workspace, or taking a day trip, a change in surroundings can invigorate your mind and spark fresh ideas.

  7. Learn a New Skill: Challenge yourself to acquire a new skill unrelated to your usual expertise. Whether it's learning to code, trying your hand at photography, or taking up a dance class, the process of acquiring new knowledge stimulates creativity and adaptability.

  8. Reflect and Iterate: Take time for reflection on your creative endeavors. What worked well? What could be improved? Iterative thinking, where you refine and build upon your previous efforts, is a powerful tool for continuous creative growth.

Remember, cultivating creativity is an ongoing process that requires intention and practice. By incorporating these practices into your daily life, you'll nurture a more vibrant and innovative mindset, unlocking your creative potential in various aspects of your personal and professional journey.
